Field trips

After the 3-day conference, participants have the possibility to book field visits to selected locations in the country to see various potato and sweetpotato initiatives and their impacts on the ground. All participants will also appreciate their share of the richness, beauty and history of the country during these trips.

We are offering different field trips and have varied the focus of these trip. The costs mentioned include transport costs, food and accommodation where necessary.

Trips that focus on potato

The trip to Holeta/Jeldu (potato) to visit seed cooperatives and Holeta Agricultural Research Centre, located one hour West of Addis Ababa (35 US$)

Debre Zeit (potato) and visit a commercial seed potato farm ( Solagrow) and learn about 30 years of agribusiness in Ethiopia (35 US$)

Both trips start in the early morning and return to Addis Ababa the same day in the evening.

Trips covering sweetpotato or sweetpotato/potato

These trips, Hawassa and Mekelle will take two nights.

Mekelle (sweetpotato and potato) is situated in the Northern part of Ethiopa (Tigray ). This trip will go by plane to Mekelle and already leave on October 12th, in the evening and return to Addis Ababa on October 14th, 2016 in the evening. Alternatively, instead of going back to Addis on October 14th, one could also continue for private visits to some of the really scenic and historically interesting sites in Ethiopia. In case you plan to go to Mekelle, make sure that your incoming flight is with Ethiopian Airlines. This will halve the price for further local flights in Ethiopia.

The trip to Hawassa ( sweetpotato) will start on October 13th, and return to Addis on October 15th, 2016. Hawassa is situated next to Lake Awassa in the Southern part of Ethiopa which and belongs to the Rift Valley. The trip to Hawassa will be handled by bus, so to give the possibility to enjoy the scenic views and landscapes on the way down from the highlands to the Rift Valley.

Field trip | Holetta and Jeldu (
October 13th, 2016)

Visit Holeta Agricultural Research Center (potato breeding, applied research, early generation potato seed production, potato tissue culture laboratory, aeroponics and sand hydroponics. Private potato Seed producers and a successful seedpotato cooperative in Jeldu.

October 13th, 2016: Leave by bus to Holeta (35 km west of Addis Ababa). Visit the Center. From there travel by bus to Jeldu to visit potato growers and a successful seed potato cooperative.  Return to Addis Ababa in the evening.


Field trip | Debre Zeit (
October 13th, 2016)

This trip will focus on agribusiness and visit Solagrow plc. The commercial quality production of potato seed by Solagrow is still unique in Ethiopia. The work of Solagrow plc. Is done in close cooperation with the Ethiopian Institute for Agricultural Research (EIAR), as well as the International Potato Center CIP (Peru, Ethiopia-branch). Adama University (Ethiopia) and Wageningen University (The Netherlands) advise on the improvement of crop production for their target-group, the Ethiopian small-holder.

October 13th, 2016: Leave by bus to Debre Zeit, almost 50 kilometer south-east of Addis Ababa. Visit the Central Office of Solagrow and the production site.   Return to Addis Ababa in the evening.


Field trip | Mekelle/Tigray 

(October 12th, 2016 – October 14th, 2016)

The trip to Tigray visits to a large Commercial Tissue laboratory, Seed potato and sweetpotato root producers and cooperatives and a public school applying an innovative approach for the promotion of orange-fleshed sweetpotatoes.

October 12th, 2016: Evening flight to Mekelle with Ethiopian Airlines and welcome dinner with the DDG of the Bureau of Agriculture.

October 13th, 2016: Visit TARI (Tigray Agriculture Research Institute), proceed to a big commercial Tissue Culture Lab and from there travel by bus to Atsbi (60 km ) to visit a potato seed cooperative. Return to Mekelle and stay overnight at Axum Hotel.

October 14th, 2016: Travel by bus to Atgudem ( 35 km ) Visit  public school that promotes sweetpotato by including it in is school feeding program. Afterward visit to the local Market Centre of Atgudem. Return to Mekelle. In the evening departure with Ethiopian Airlines from Mekelle to Addis Ababa.


Field trip | Hawassa (October 13th, 2016 – October 15th, 2016)

Hawassa visit Jara plc, a commercial sweetpotato vine multiplier. Visit to the Southern Agricultural Research Institute (SARI): Sweetpotato research, breeding and source seed production

October 13th, 2016: Leave early by bus and travel via the Rift Valley to Hawassa, which is 230 km south of Addis Ababa (5 hours’ drive with lunch in Sabana Resort Valley at Lake Langano). Visit Jara plc, commercial sweetpotato vine multiplier. Stay overnight in Hawassa.

October 14th, 2016: Visit SARI and private sweetpotato mulitpliers in the area. Stay overnight in Hawassa.

October 15th, 2016: Return to Addis Ababa in the morning. Arrival an Addis Ababa in the afternoon.
